BREAKING NEWS! I’m so excited, I could cry to tell you that I am once again on the review team for the upcoming season 6 of The Handmaid’s Tale, the final season. The original 1985 novel by Margaret Atwood has been my favorite book of all time ever since I picked it up for the first time 15 years ago. Bruce Miller‘s team then brought it to life into present day in my favorite tv series of all time. To say I’m ecstatic to get to watch the season before the rest of the world ahead of the April 8th premiere is a massive understatement. I am overwhelmingly grateful to Hulu & The Handmaid’s Tale for this incredible opportunity.
Season 6 premieres on Hulu on April 8th with 3 episodes. Then, 1 new episode streams each week on Tuesdays until the series finale on May 27th.
My overall season 6, spoiler-free review will go live on the blog on 4/8 at 9AM PT. My in-depth reviews/analyses for each episode will go live at 9AM PT on each streaming date & will contain LOTS of spoilers, so be warned!
NOTE: I’m hyper aware of the social & political situation we find ourselves in at this present moment. HOWEVER, when discussing this show, please remember how inappropriate it is to say things like “we’re heading into Gilead/The Handmaid’s Tale”. The truth is that the horrors that Margaret Atwood includes in her novel & that are in the show have all already happened to women all over the world in various time periods, & many to Black women & women of color in America (Margaret Atwood has said this explicitly many times). The show demonstrates the “what if” it happened to white women in America. The point that I want you to take it is this: Do you see how angry you are at these atrocities happening in The Handmaid’s Tale? THAT is how angry you should be at oppression happening to people whenever you see it, not just when it happens to white women. The other thing I hope you take from this show/book is what happens when we ignore and overlook instances of fascism when it happens to others.
I look forward to thoughtful conversations with you throughout this last and final season!
